Do I Need a Cloudlifter with a Focusrite Scarlett and SM7B?

Gen 3 Scarletts often need a Cloudlifter with an SM7B. 4th Gen 2i2 and 4i4 list 69 dB of gain, so many setups do not.

Search results for “Cloudlifter Scarlett SM7B” still read like two different decades arguing with each other. Older forum threads and 2018–2022 interface reviews treat a Cloudlifter CL-1 as mandatory. Newer 4th Generation Scarlett write-ups say the preamps finally have enough gain, often citing about 69 dB, and tell you to skip the extra box.

Both camps are describing real hardware. They are not describing the same Scarlett.

This is a spec-based decision article, not a bench test. The numbers below come from Focusrite’s published product pages and user guides, Shure’s SM7B user guide, and Cloud Microphones’ CL-1 product page. We already cover the current 2i2 as a home-studio interface in the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 review. That page does not answer this pairing. The pairing is what this page is for.

The short answer

Identify the Scarlett generation first. Then decide.

  • Scarlett 2i2 or 4i4, 3rd Generation: Focusrite lists 56 dB of microphone gain. Shure says the SM7B wants more than 60 dB. An inline booster is the usual fix.
  • Scarlett 2i2 or 4i4, 4th Generation: Focusrite lists 69 dB of microphone gain. That clears Shure’s 60 dB line. Try the SM7B straight in before you buy another box.
  • Scarlett Solo, 4th Generation: Focusrite lists 57 dB, not 69 dB. Treat Solo like the older two-channel units, not like a 4th Gen 2i2.
  • 2nd Generation and earlier Scarletts: Those reviews that say “yes, you need a Cloudlifter” were written for this hardware. The advice still applies if that is the box on your desk.

Why the search results disagree

The SM7B did not suddenly get louder. The popular interface next to it did.

From roughly 2015 through the 3rd Generation years, a Scarlett 2i2 was the default first interface and an SM7B was the default “broadcast” microphone. That pairing produced a familiar complaint: the gain knob sat near the end of its travel, the recording sat too low, and raising the clip in the DAW also raised the hiss. An inline activator — most often a Cloudlifter — became the stock recommendation. Those posts are still indexed. They are not wrong about the interfaces they were written for.

4th Generation Scarlett 2i2 and 4i4 units changed the published microphone gain range from 56 dB to 69 dB. That 13 dB jump is the entire argument. Thirteen decibels is a large level change: it is more than half of the Cloudlifter’s own +25 dB rating. Once that spec shipped, newer reviews started saying you might not need the extra box. Older pages did not disappear.

The SERP looks split because it is dated, not because the physics is mysterious.

Why the SM7B is so gain-hungry

Shure’s SM7B product page and the SM7B user guide describe a cardioid dynamic (moving-coil) microphone with a 50 Hz to 20,000 Hz frequency response and a 150 Ω output impedance. The number that drives this whole article is sensitivity: −59.0 dBV/Pa (1.12 mV) at 1 kHz, open circuit, where 1 Pa equals 94 dB SPL.

That is a quiet electrical output for a studio microphone. A typical large-diaphragm condenser is much hotter. The SM7B is designed that way. The low sensitivity, the foam windscreen, the internal air-suspension shock mount, and the electromagnetic-hum shielding are why people buy it for untreated rooms, close speech, and guitar cabinets that would overwhelm a more delicate capsule. Those same traits mean the preamp has to do more work.

Shure is explicit about the preamp requirement. In the user guide’s “Preamplifier Use” section, the company writes that the SM7B “requires more gain than what most entry-level or mid-tier preamplifiers can deliver” and tells you to “use an inline boost amplifier or stronger preamp if your preamp does not have more than 60 dB of gain.”

Sixty decibels is the manufacturer’s line in the sand. It is the number this article uses. Anything below it is the old “yes, Cloudlifter” case. Anything comfortably above it is the new “maybe not” case.

Shure also tells you to speak directly into the grille, 1 to 6 inches (2.54 to 15 cm) away. Distance is not a side note. Pull the mic back to a casual desktop gap and the already-low output drops again. A quiet talker at 8 inches can make a 69 dB preamp feel tight. A close, projected voice can make a 56 dB preamp almost work. Technique changes the decision as much as the interface generation.

The rear-panel switches matter less for gain and more for tone. Flat response is the default. Bass rolloff cuts low-end buildup from HVAC, traffic, or proximity effect. Presence boost adds midrange emphasis for speech clarity. Neither switch is a substitute for preamp gain.

Gen 3 vs Gen 4 Scarlett gain (manufacturer specs)

*EIN unit: Focusrite’s 3rd Gen user-guide spec tables print this figure as −128 dB (A-weighted). The matching 2i2 3rd Gen and 4i4 3rd Gen product pages print −128 dBu (A-weighted). The table uses dBu, the usual unit for EIN. That is Focusrite’s labeling, not two different measurements.

Read the table the way Shure wrote the rule:

  • 56 dB and 57 dB sit under 60 dB. 2i2 3rd Gen, 4i4 3rd Gen, and Solo 4th Gen do not meet Shure’s published preamp recommendation on paper.
  • 69 dB sits 9 dB above 60 dB. 2i2 4th Gen and 4i4 4th Gen do meet it on paper.

Two other spec changes ride along with the 4th Gen 2i2/4i4 redesign. Maximum input level at minimum gain moves from +9 dBu to +16 dBu, which is headroom for louder sources, not extra whisper-gain. A-weighted dynamic range moves from 111 dB to 116 dB. Equivalent input noise is listed at −128 dBu on the 3rd Gen 2i2 and −127 dBu on the 4th Gen 2i2 (see the EIN unit note under the table). That 1 dB EIN difference is not the story. The gain-range column is the story.

Do not copy the wrong 4th Gen number onto every Scarlett. Marketing language for the 4th Generation family often talks about “69 dB of gain.” The Solo product page and the Solo user guide still print 57 dB. If your interface is a Solo, the 2i2 review on this site does not describe your preamp.

How to tell which Scarlett you have

4th Generation 2i2 and 4i4 units add front-panel Auto Gain and Clip Safe and use digitally controlled preamps that Focusrite Control 2 can move in 1 dB steps. 3rd Generation 2i2 units have Air and gain-halo rings but not those two buttons. Both generations use USB-C, so the cable is not a generation ID. The model name on the bottom plate, or the product page that matches your software, is.

If you bought a used “Scarlett 2i2” listing with no generation in the title, check for Auto Gain before you assume you have 69 dB.

What a Cloudlifter actually does

A Cloudlifter is not a magic tone box and it is not a replacement interface. Cloud Microphones describes the CL-1 as an in-line mic activator with patented Class-A discrete JFET circuitry that provides up to +25 dB of gain for a passive microphone.

The electrical job is simple:

  1. The Scarlett’s XLR input supplies +48 V phantom power to the Cloudlifter.
  2. The Cloudlifter turns that phantom power into extra clean gain in front of the interface preamp.
  3. The Cloudlifter does not pass phantom power through to the microphone. Cloud lists that as a ribbon- and tube-mic safety feature. For an SM7B it is just how the box is wired.

Cloud also lists a 3 kΩ input impedance and recommends the CL-1 specifically for low-output dynamics, including the SM7B. The company licensed the same patented approach to Shure for the later SM7dB. That is useful context: the “inline booster” category exists because Shure’s own SM7B guide admits most small preamps are short on gain.

The reason people hear less hiss after adding one is not mysterious. You turn the Scarlett’s gain knob down. The booster does part of the amplification before the interface’s noisiest top-of-the-dial region. Cloud’s own copy frames this as letting the preamp work in a more comfortable range. That framing matches how 3rd Gen Scarlett owners have described the pairing for years.

A Cloudlifter does not:

  • Change the SM7B into a condenser.
  • Replace acoustic treatment or a closer mic position.
  • Fix a bad USB cable, a wrong driver, or a 60 Hz ground loop. Those are different problems; see the ground-loop walkthrough if the noise is a steady hum rather than a raised noise floor.
  • Work as a guitar boost. Guitar still belongs on the Scarlett’s instrument (INST / Hi-Z) input, as covered in how to record guitar at home.

Decision by Scarlett model

4th Gen 2i2 or 4i4: start without a Cloudlifter

This is the pairing newer reviews are talking about. Published gain is 69 dB. Shure asked for more than 60 dB. On paper you are clear.

Set the SM7B 1 to 6 inches from the source, leave the Scarlett’s Air mode off until the level is right, and raise gain until peaks sit in a healthy range in the DAW. A common rule of thumb for spoken word is about −12 to −6 dBFS, with more headroom for a singer who jumps; that range is not a measurement this site took. 4th Gen 2i2 and 4i4 also have Auto Gain, which will take a short sample and park the preamp for you. If that routine produces a solid clip without the knob slammed against the stop, you do not need a Cloudlifter.

Air mode is a voicing option, not extra gain. It is the same idea discussed in the 2i2 review: presence and harmonic color, not a substitute for the 69 dB range.

Buy the Cloudlifter later only if the recording is still too quiet, the noise floor is still in the way, or you want the interface gain lower for a reason you can hear.

4th Gen Solo: treat it like the older units

Solo is the easy mistake. It is 4th Generation. It has the newer converters, Air, and USB-C. It does not have the 69 dB digitally controlled preamp of the 2i2 and 4i4. Focusrite lists 57 dB. That is 3 dB under Shure’s 60 dB recommendation and only 1 dB above a 3rd Gen 2i2.

If your SM7B into a Solo needs the gain knob near maximum for a normal speaking voice, an inline booster is still the straightforward hardware fix. Alternatively, step up to a 4th Gen 2i2 if you also want a second input. The home recording for beginners chain is built around a two-input interface for a reason: voice on one channel, guitar or a second mic on the other.

3rd Gen 2i2, 4i4, and other 56 dB Scarletts: a Cloudlifter is the usual answer

This is the pairing that created the “yes” articles. 56 dB versus Shure’s “more than 60 dB” is not a rounding error. Plenty of people have made usable SM7B records on a 3rd Gen Scarlett by working close and accepting a hotter DAW clip. Plenty of others have hated the noise. The Cloudlifter exists for the second group.

If you already own the 3rd Gen interface and the SM7B, adding a CL-1 (or another inline activator) is cheaper than replacing the interface. If you are buying the interface new in 2026, a 4th Gen 2i2 is the cleaner way to buy the missing gain once, which is why that model keeps showing up in the under-$200 interface shortlist.

Guitar cabinets and loud sources are a different decision

An SM7B in front of a guitar amp is not a podcast whisper. Sound-pressure level at the grille is high. The microphone’s low sensitivity becomes an advantage, and even a 56 dB preamp often has enough level. Placement matters more than a gain booster on a loud cabinet.

If the only job for this microphone is a loud cabinet, do not buy a Cloudlifter on the strength of vocal-forum advice. If the same microphone also records quiet speech in the same room, decide for the quiet job. That is the harder one.

When a 4th Gen 2i2 still might want a Cloudlifter

69 dB is enough on paper. It is not a promise that every voice, room, and working distance will look pretty on the meter.

A Cloudlifter can still earn its keep on a 4th Gen 2i2 or 4i4 when:

  • The talker is quiet or inconsistent. Soft speech at the far end of Shure’s 1–6 inch window asks for more gain than a projected radio voice.
  • The microphone sits farther away than Shure recommends. Desktop arms drift. A 10-inch gap is common and costly in level.
  • The XLR run is long. Cloud’s own copy mentions driving a stronger signal over longer cable. Stage or multi-room runs see more of that benefit than a 10-foot desk cable.
  • You want the Scarlett gain knob out of the top third. Even a clean 69 dB preamp is not equally quiet at every setting. Some engineers still prefer to split the gain between an inline stage and the interface.
  • You also use passive ribbons or other low-output dynamics. The Cloudlifter then serves more than one microphone.

None of those cases require you to buy the box on day one. They are reasons to keep the option open after you have actually recorded a pass.

When you should skip it

Skip the Cloudlifter if:

  • You have a 4th Gen 2i2 or 4i4, you work close, and the meters already look healthy.
  • The source is loud: a guitar cabinet, a snare, a shouted vocal. A louder source often gives the SM7B enough level without an inline booster.
  • You are shopping for a new microphone and can choose the SM7dB instead. Shure’s own page rates the built-in preamp at +18 dB or +28 dB, with a bypass that behaves like an SM7B. Cloud licensed the underlying idea to Shure. Buying both an SM7B and a Cloudlifter and buying one SM7dB are two ways to purchase the same kind of boost.
  • The noise you hear is not a raised hiss from high preamp gain. Fan noise, a ground loop, or a bad cable will survive a Cloudlifter.

Raising a quiet clip with a DAW utility gain plugin is free and always available. It also raises the noise floor by the same amount. Hardware gain in front of the converter is the reason Cloudlifters and FetHeads exist. Software gain is the last resort, not the first.

How to tell, in your room, without inventing a lab test

You do not need a reviewer’s bench to read your own meters.

  1. Place the SM7B on axis, 1 to 6 inches from the mouth or the speaker grille, as Shure specifies.
  2. Disable Air until the level is set. Air changes the sound; it does not add the missing decibels.
  3. Record a normal-level passage — the voice you will actually publish, not a shouted test phrase.
  4. Look at peak meters. If you cannot reach a healthy peak without the gain control against the stop, you are in Cloudlifter territory.
  5. Listen to the noise floor on a silent bar at that same gain setting. If the hiss is part of the vocal after a normal amount of compression, an inline booster is doing real work, not placebo work.
  6. If a 4th Gen 2i2 or 4i4 reaches level with room to spare on the knob, stop shopping.

That is the whole diagnostic. It uses the manufacturer’s placement and gain figures plus the meters already in your DAW.

How to wire a Cloudlifter if you do need one

The chain is:

SM7B → XLR cable → Cloudlifter input → XLR cable → Scarlett mic input

Then:

  1. Set the Scarlett gain low.
  2. Turn 48 V phantom power on. The Cloudlifter will not work without it. The SM7B still does not want phantom power; the Cloudlifter blocks it. The phantom power guide is the longer version of that distinction.
  3. Raise Scarlett gain until the peaks look the same as they would on a hotter microphone.

Mute speakers or drop monitor level before you punch 48 V, and do not hot-plug the XLR while phantom is on. Those are the same safety habits as any phantom-powered device.

A Cloudlifter is useless on the Scarlett’s instrument jack. Hi-Z guitar and bass stay on the INST input. Microphone-level XLR is the only path that belongs in this article.

Alternatives to a Cloudlifter

Triton Audio FetHead. Triton Audio rates FetHead at +27 dB into a 3 kΩ load. It is the same product category: an inline, phantom-powered booster that does not pass phantom to the microphone. People compare it with the CL-1 because the job is the same. Choose on size, price, and availability. This page is not a shoot-out.

Shure SM7dB. Official ratings are +18 dB or +28 dB of onboard gain, phantom-powered, with a bypass that returns SM7B-level output. If you do not already own an SM7B, this is the cleaner single purchase for a low-gain interface.

A different Scarlett. Moving from a 3rd Gen 2i2 or a Solo to a 4th Gen 2i2 buys the 69 dB preamp and a second input. That can be the better spend if the interface is due for replacement anyway. Mac-specific driver and I/O notes live in best audio interfaces for Mac.

A different microphone. If you have not bought the SM7B yet and your interface is a 56–57 dB Scarlett you plan to keep, a hotter dynamic or a condenser may be the simpler path. An SM7B is a taste and isolation choice, not a requirement.

Software gain only. Fine for a scratch vocal. Poor as the permanent answer on a 3rd Gen pairing, because every decibel you add after the converter also adds the noise that was already there.

A clean decision checklist

Use this in order:

  1. Which Scarlett? 4th Gen 2i2/4i4 (69 dB), Solo 4th Gen (57 dB), or 3rd Gen / older (56 dB or less).
  2. Does that number clear 60 dB? Shure’s line. Yes or no.
  3. How loud is the source, and how close is the mic? Quiet speech at a distance needs more help than a close vocal or a guitar cab.
  4. Do you already own the SM7B? If yes, add a booster or change the interface. If no, consider SM7dB or a hotter mic before you stack three boxes.
  5. Record one pass and read the meters. Specs decide the default. Your peaks decide the purchase.

Default recommendations, stated as defaults rather than laws:

  • 4th Gen 2i2 or 4i4 + SM7B, close speech or singing: no Cloudlifter until a real pass says otherwise.
  • Solo 4th Gen or any 3rd Gen Scarlett + SM7B speech: plan on a Cloudlifter, FetHead, or SM7dB.
  • Any Scarlett + SM7B on a loud guitar cabinet: try without first.
