Forum threads keep asking the same question — Dual Lock or Velcro on a pedalboard — and the answers bounce between “Velcro is fine” and “Dual Lock or nothing.” Sweetwater, Guitar World, and Fender do not publish a dedicated Dual Lock vs Velcro guide. TheGearPage, TalkBass, theFretBoard, and similar boards do. This page is the dedicated comparison those threads never quite write down.

The board itself is a separate purchase. If you still need the tray, start with best pedalboards and power supplies. This page is only about what sticks the boxes to that tray.

What Dual Lock is (and what “Velcro” actually is)

Dual Lock is 3M’s name for a reclosable fastener whose stems end in tiny mushroom caps. Press two pieces together and the mushrooms interlock with an audible snap. The fastener mates to itself. You do not pair a “hook” side with a “loop” side. 3M sells three stem densities — Type 170, Type 250, and Type 400 — named for the approximate number of stems per square inch. Type 250 is the density Pedaltrain and most pedalboard write-ups mean when they say Dual Lock.

3M’s SJ3550 Type 250 listing describes black interlocking mushroom heads, a conformable acrylic foam tape, indoor/outdoor use, and long-term temperature resistance of 200°F (93°C). The SJ3560 Type 250 listing is the clear, firmer-acrylic sibling, rated 220°F (104°C). Both mate with Type 170, 250, or 400 to change peel strength. 3M’s marketing line for SJ3550 is up to 5× the tensile strength of typical hook-and-loop. The company’s own SJ3550 data sheet lists a Type 250-to-250 dynamic tensile disengage figure around 43 lb/in² and a cycle life on the order of 1,000 open/close cycles. Those are 3M’s published numbers, not measurements from this desk.

Hook-and-loop is the generic system people call Velcro. One side is hooks. The other is a soft loop pile. The two sides grab when you press them together and peel apart when you lift a corner. VELCRO is a brand; Pedaltrain, Donner, and most pedalboard makers sell unbranded or house-brand hook-and-loop. Pedaltrain’s Official Hook-and-Loop Pack (PT-OHL-10) is ten feet of hook and ten feet of loop with adhesive backing. Many Pedaltrain boards also ship with loop already covering the top surface, so you only add hook (or Dual Lock) to the pedals.

Hold and wiggle

A pedalboard fastener has two jobs. It has to survive a straight lift (someone picking the board up by a wah, a cable snag, a case lid catching a knob). And it has to survive shear and wiggle: toe pressure on a switch, a wah rocker, a tuner you slap on between songs, a van ride where the board sits on its side.

Hook-and-loop is strong in shear when the contact area is large and the hook is clean. It is weaker in a straight peel. That is why a pedal that sits still usually stays put, and why a pedal you lift from one corner pops off. Player reports on TheGearPage and TalkBass are consistent here: light overdrives and tuners stay put on industrial hook-and-loop; tall enclosures, wahs, and anything you stomp off-center start to walk.

Dual Lock Type 250-to-250 is a different failure mode. The mushrooms have to unsnap. 3M’s tensile figures are much higher than typical hook-and-loop, which is why touring techs treat Dual Lock as the “this will not walk” option. The trade-off is that you also have to unsnap it. A Dual Lock pedal does not lift for a quick battery change. You peel a corner or you fight the whole enclosure.

Wiggle is where Dual Lock earns its reputation. A stomp is a small, repeated shear. Hook-and-loop can creep a few millimeters over a month of gigs as hooks fatigue and lint fills the pile. Dual Lock’s snap does not creep the same way. Published player reports about Dual Lock walking are almost always about too little surface area, adhesive failure, or the hybrid mix onto worn loop — not about Type 250 mushrooms sliding past each other.

3M’s own installation note is easy to ignore and expensive when you do: use about four square inches of Dual Lock per pound of dead weight, apply at 68–80°F (20–27°C), and press at least 15 psi. A 1290NS wah plus a power brick is not “two little coins.” Underside mounts and heavy boxes need more tape, not a stronger brand name.

Heat (the parked-car problem)

A closed car in summer routinely exceeds 140°F on the dash and can go higher on dark interiors. That is the test players actually run, whether they mean to or not.

Read the Dual Lock family names before you blame “Dual Lock” as a class. 3M’s technical document splits temperature resistance by adhesive:

  • SJ3560 / SJ3561 / SJ3562 — firm acrylic, about 220°F (104°C)
  • SJ3550 / SJ3551 / SJ3552 — conformable acrylic, about 200°F (93°C)
  • SJ3870 family — about 158°F (70°C)
  • SJ3540 / SJ3541 / SJ3542 — rubber-based, about 120°F (49°C), indoor

A rubber-based SJ3540 strip in a hot trunk is the wrong product, not proof that mushroom fasteners melt. Acrylic SJ3550 / SJ3560 is the class this page means. Apply it in a room, not on a cold garage floor, and give pressure-sensitive adhesive a full cure (3M and most tape makers talk in terms of hours to a day, not “stick it and load the van”).

Hook-and-loop fails in heat the same way: the adhesive, not the hooks. Cheap kits use rubber adhesives that soften, leave a gummy rectangle on the enclosure, and let the pedal skate. VELCRO Brand Industrial Strength and Pedaltrain’s official pack use heavier backings and stronger adhesives than the dollar-bin rolls. Even those are not a license to bake a board on a rear parcel shelf. If the board lives in a car, shade, a hard case, and acrylic-adhesive tape matter more than the mushroom-versus-hook debate.

The mushrooms themselves are polyolefin. 3M warns that exceeding the published ceiling can soften stems and deform the caps. A passenger cabin is usually under the SJ3550 / SJ3560 ceilings. A dashboard in direct sun is a different climate. Do not store the board glass-up in a locked car and then write a forum post about Dual Lock “melting.”

Lint, grime, and the death of hook-and-loop

Hook-and-loop has a hygiene problem Dual Lock mostly avoids. The hook side is a lint magnet. Stage rugs, gig-bag fleece, hoodie cuffs, and the fuzzy loop already on the board shed fibers into the hooks. Hold drops as the hooks fill. Players clean hooks with a stiff brush or a bit of tape; they rarely restore a cheap strip to new.

The loop side mats and pills. A Pedaltrain that has been on the road for two years often has shiny, compressed loop in the high-traffic rectangles. New hook still grabs. Old hook on tired loop does not. That is why a board that “used to hold fine” starts walking without any change in pedal weight.

Dual Lock’s mushrooms do not fill with lint the same way. Dust and stage dirt can sit on the caps, and a blast of compressed air or a dry brush helps, but you do not get the classic Velcro hairball. The Dual Lock failure you will see is adhesive residue and torn foam if you peel it badly, plus loop wear if you run the hybrid (mushrooms on pedals, loop on the board). In that hybrid, the loop is the consumable. Plan to refresh the board’s loop rectangles every so often; do not assume the Dual Lock coins are the part that died.

Grime on the enclosure matters for both systems. Oil from a die-cast box, powder-coat dust, and leftover guitar-polish wax are why “the tape will not stick.” Isopropyl alcohol on the pedal bottom, a dry wait, then the tape. 3M wants a clean, dry substrate and firm pressure. Skipping that step is how both Dual Lock and industrial Velcro “fail” on day one.

Removal: squares vs full strips, and how to pry

This is the argument Velcro usually wins, and the argument Dual Lock users wish they had read before they sheeted an entire pedal underside.

Squares, not full strips. A 1-inch or 1.25-inch square (or Pedaltrain’s Type 250 Dual Lock coins) gives you a corner you can start. A full-width strip from jack to jack does not. When the adhesive has cured, a full strip is closer to a glued-on gasket than to tape. You will spend more time removing one full strip than you spent building the board.

Pry, do not yank. Dual Lock-to-Dual Lock wants a peel angle. Lift one corner of the pedal just enough to get a plastic scraper, a guitar pick, or dental floss under the tape, then saw. A straight upward rip can take powder coat, a rubber skid pad, or a battery door. Hook-and-loop is more forgiving of a careless lift, which is why first boards stay on Velcro until the layout stops changing.

Heat helps the adhesive, not the mushrooms. A hair dryer on low softens acrylic and rubber adhesives so the backing releases. You are not trying to melt the Dual Lock stems. Once the tape is off, residue yields to isopropyl alcohol or a citrus adhesive remover. Wipe clean and let the enclosure dry before you restick. Solvent on a plastic enclosure or a silkscreened bottom label is a judgment call — test a corner.

Leave the board’s loop alone if you can. If the Pedaltrain already has loop on top, refresh worn rectangles instead of peeling the entire surface. Full-surface loop removal on an aluminum rail board is a Saturday you do not get back.

If you know you will swap a pedal next month, Dual Lock-to-Dual Lock on that enclosure is the wrong commitment. Use hook-and-loop or the hybrid for anything still on trial. Save Type 250-to-250 for the boxes that have earned a permanent rectangle.

This is the setup most working boards actually run, and it is also the setup 3M does not print as an official pair.

A Pedaltrain-style board arrives with loop on the playing surface. Players stick Dual Lock Type 250 on the pedals and press the mushrooms into that loop. The stems grab the pile. Hold is better than hook-to-loop in most player reports. Peel is easier than Dual Lock-to-Dual Lock. Battery changes become possible again. You keep the loop already paid for.

Be honest about what that is. 3M’s published mating table is Dual Lock to Dual Lock (170/250/400 combinations). The company tells you not to mate 170-to-170 (too weak) or 400-to-400 (too hard to engage). It does not rate Dual Lock-to-loop as a fastener pair. The hybrid is pedalboard folk practice — widely reported on TheGearPage, TalkBass, and Pedaltrain-owner threads — not a spec-sheet configuration.

What players report when the hybrid disappoints:

  • Worn or cheap loop. Mushrooms need pile. Bald loop is just fabric.
  • Not enough Dual Lock area. One coin under a wah is not a mount.
  • Oily enclosures. Same adhesive rules as a full Dual Lock install.
  • Underside power supplies. Gravity plus vibration is a different load than a pedal sitting on top. Do not trust the hybrid under the board.

If you want 3M’s published strength, put Type 250 on the pedal and Type 250 on the board (or use Pedaltrain’s Dual Lock coins as matched sets). If you want a board you can still rearrange, put Dual Lock on the pedals and keep the loop on the tray. If you want cheap and reversible, hook-and-loop both sides.

Heavy gear: power supplies, wahs, underside mounts

Fastener choice gets serious when the object is heavy, moving, or hanging.

Isolated power supplies are the usual underside mount. A Voodoo Lab Pedal Power or Strymon Zuma is a dense brick. It hangs from the rails, fights gravity all night, and takes van vibration. Hook-and-loop alone is a common regret. Dual Lock Type 250 with real surface area, plus a strap or zip-tie safety on touring boards, is the conservative read of both 3M’s weight guideline and player reports. The electrical side of that brick is a different article: guitar pedal power supply compatibility covers voltage, polarity, and isolation. This page is only about whether the brick stays on the rails. A supply that shifts can yank DC cables and create the exact crackle the pedalboard noise guide is trying to eliminate.

Wahs and volume pedals rock. The rocker is a cyclic peel/shear on the heel and toe. Hook-and-loop walks. Dual Lock helps if you use more than a couple of coins and keep the tape out of the rocker’s travel. Some players add a dedicated wah mount or a second row of tape under the heel. Tall or top-heavy enclosures (some loopers, some multi-effects) lever against the tape when you stomp the front edge. More contact area toward the front feet matters more than one huge strip down the centerline.

None of this replaces a sensible signal chain. A quiet, correctly ordered board that sheds a wah mid-song is still a failed board.

The best pedalboards cost table already puts generic Velcro around $5, Pedaltrain Velcro around $10, and 3M Dual Lock around $15 in a mid-range build. That row is a line item, not a fastener guide — which is why this page exists instead of a retitle of that roundup.

Cost per pedal is the number that matters. A first five-pedal Pedaltrain is cheaper to dress in hook-and-loop, and you will throw some of that tape away when the overdrive vs distortion vs fuzz question finally resolves into a second dirt box. A locked ten-pedal touring board is cheaper to dress in Dual Lock once than to re-stick walking Velcro before every weekend.

Which to buy: first Pedaltrain vs locked touring board

First Pedaltrain (or Donner, or any rail board you are still learning). Buy hook-and-loop. Pedaltrain’s official pack or VELCRO Brand Industrial Strength is enough. Put hook on the pedals if the board already has loop. Leave Dual Lock in the cart until the layout stops changing — tuner first, one drive, one time-based effect, power sorted. You will move boxes. Squares of industrial Velcro peel. Full Dual Lock sheets do not.

Hybrid once the core is stable. Dual Lock Type 250 squares on the pedals, existing loop on the board. This is the default gigging compromise in the forum threads that still rank for this query. Refresh tired loop. Use more area on the wah and anything tall. Keep the power supply on Dual Lock-to-Dual Lock or Dual Lock plus a tie, not on hope.

Locked touring board. Type 250 on both sides for the boxes that never leave. Skip Dual Lock when the pedal is on loan, the enclosure is vintage and you care about the finish, or you change batteries from the bottom every week. Skip cheap Velcro when the board goes in a car, the wah already walks, or the power supply hangs.

The fastener does not choose your pedals, your power, or your order. It only decides whether that work stays where you put it.

Recommendation

Start with hook-and-loop on a first Pedaltrain. Rearranging is part of learning the board. Industrial or Pedaltrain hook-and-loop is the reversible choice.

Move to Dual Lock Type 250 — SJ3550 / SJ3560 class, in squares — when the board travels or a pedal starts to walk. That is the locked-touring answer the forum threads are reaching for when they say “just use Dual Lock.”

Use the hybrid if you want both. Dual Lock on the pedals, loop on the board, extra tape and a tie on the power supply. Treat it as folk practice with a good track record, not as a 3M-rated assembly.
